Hello movie fans! Recently…the internet released the trailer for the upcoming horror/slasher flick – DETENTION. Are you ready ladies? The film stars Josh Hutcherson of THE HUNGER GAMES and Dane Cook and will hit theaters on Friday, April 13th…it’s the perfect date to release a movie like this!
By the looks of the trailer…we’re going for a little rideeeeeee.
OK…some of you got that…and some of you didn’t. (lol) But seriously…not only is the release date cool…but the Director Joseph Kahn is…(drum roll please)… from H-Town…as in HOUSTON! Check out the 411 below…you might already be a fan of his music videos! POW!
Director Joseph Kahn was raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas where his parents moved in the calculation of enrolling him in the area’s prestigious medical schools.
However, the young Kahn quickly degenerated into a comic book junkie, television/movie addict, and overall pop culture sponge. Derailing any hopes of a proper job, he began his directing career in his teens, shooting skateboarding videos of his friends while working as a popcorn concessionaire, grocery store auditor (can counter), and hotel front desk clerk to help fund these projects. He eventually enrolled at NYU where after a year and a half into school, he dropped out to embrace the emerging market of hip hop videos.
Within two years Kahn executed dozens of low budget videos where he served as a one man army, acting as his own cinematographer, editor, and production designer. During this time, he developed his self-taught filmmaking skills that would launch him to the forefront of a new generation of emerging directors.
Moving to Los Angeles in 1995, Kahn became highly sought in the music video industry, eventually working with diverse artists such as: U2, The Chemical Brothers, Gwen Stefani, Blink 182, Eminem, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan, Backstreet Boys, TLC, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Aerosmith, Faith Hill, Moby, Jamiroquai, Nelly, Justin Timberlake, George Michael, Kelly Clarkson, Busta Ryhmes, Garbage, Korn, Janet Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Destiny’s Child, and many more.
Today he is credited with launching and expanding the careers of many of his artists, and has collected multiple Music Video Production awards. He has won several MTV Music Video Awards with nominations for best video for Brandy & Monica “The Boy is Mine”, and Brintey Spears “Toxic.” He won his first Grammy for Eminem’s “Without Me” video which also won the MTV VMA’s Best Video of the Year, as well as Best Director. His video for Muse “Knights of Cydonia” won the Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Award.
In 1999, he started his own production company, Supermega, which is now housed under HSI Productions. He has directed commercials for Acura, BMW, Ford, Vodafone, Budweiser, British Telecom, Miller, Bacardi, Asics, HP, Saab, T-Mobile, Target, Coors Light, Nascar, and Playstation. His Fox/Nascar campaign won a Clio for visual effects.
In 2004, he made his feature film debut with the Warner Brothers tongue in-cheek action film TORQUE. Starring Martin Henderson and Ice Cube, the guilty pleasure motorcycle movie was a modern riff on Roger Corman popcorn flicks.
Said Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times: “The irony is that for pure cinematic artistry it arguably outdistances some of the more prestigious current offerings. It is a very knowing venture, marking the feature debut of music video veteran Joseph Kahn.”
Kahn currently resides in Los Angeles.
