2011 American Music Awards Recap

Live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, the 2011 American Music Awards was a must-see event and had some of the best performances of the year. Taylor Swift won three trophies including Artist of the Year while Nicki Minaj took home two awards for Best Hip Hop Artist and Album Awards. In case you missed it, we’ve got you covered:

· Nicki Minaj opened the 39th annual show with “Turn Me On” alongside David Guetta followed by her own hit single, “Superbass.” Yes! Those were speakers implanted into her backside.

o SPOTTED! Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez sang along in the audience.

· Last year’s Artist of the Year, Justin Bieber got in the holiday spirit by performing “Under the Mistletoe.”

· Kelly Clarkson delivered a swinging rendition of her “Mr. Know It All” with backup dancers dressed as 1930s-era photographers.

· The Band Perry crooned an emotional “If I Die Young.”

· Chris Brown showed off his vocal ability with his ballad, “All Back” and then danced to his rock-inspired track, “Say It With Me.”

o He dyed his hair blonde again!

· Enrique Iglesias performed “I Like How It Feels” and “Tonight (I’m Lovin You)” with Ludacris.

· Jennifer Lopez performed a medley of her new songs including “Papi (Move Your Body)” and “On The Floor.”

o In case you were wondering which car that was on stage, it was the same Fiat 500 that also appears in her music video for “Papi.”

· OneRepublic gave an impressive performance of their hit song, “Good Life.”

· Lil Jon served as Pitbull’s hype-man before he was joined by Marc Anthony to perform their new collaboration “Rain Over Me.”

· Katy Perry played a pink guitar while performing “The One That Got Away” – she received a standing ovation.

· Mary J Blige performed her new single, “Mr. Wrong,” she then gave a quick tribute to the late Heavy D.

o Her performance comes on the eve of releasing her tenth album, My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1).

· Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera took stage with their duet “Moves Like Jagger.”

o What did you think of Christina in that white dress?

· Frontman Adam Levine immediately went to the next stage to belt out the hook to Gym Class Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts.”

· Backed with a live band, Drake showcased “Headlines” while Young Money label-mate, Nicki Minaj, cheered and sang along from the crowd.

· Daughtry performed “’Crawling Back To You.”

· For the first time ever, Will.i.am showcased his new song “Hard” with Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger.

o Did you notice that Mick’s pre-recorded video for the performance was delayed and not in-sync with the song?

· LMFAO concluded the show with “Party Anthem” which included a special dance appearance with Justin Bieber. They also showcased “Sexy And I Know It” – the duo both striped down to smiley-face boxers and showed off their bodies alongside David Hasselhoff and YouTube star Keenan Cahill!

· Nicki Minaj started crying during her acceptance speech after she beat out Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Jay-Z for Best Rap Album.

· Katy Perry looked shocked when Heidi Klum presented her with an achievement award for having five number one singles from one album, Teenage Dream. She is the only female to achieve this feat, beating out Mariah Carey, Prince and Michael Jackson who all did this more than one LP.

· Jennifer Lopez started speaking Spanish after she won the award for Best Latin Artist. She said during her speech, “It’s been up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things.”

· A speechless Taylor Swift was in true shock when she won Artist Of The Year, she thanked her fans numerous times during her speech. This marks the second time in her career that she won this coveted award.
