BET Awards Quick Recap


The 2011 BET Awards was definitely a ceremony that you don’t want to miss! Big highlights of the show included the legendary Patti LaBelle accepting this year’s BET Lifetime Achievement Awardand Steve Harvey receiving the BET Humanitarian Award for his unrelenting “work to uplift the lives of young men.” Hosted by Kevin Hart, the event included incredible performances from Beyonce,Rick RossDJ Khaled, Ace HoodMary J. BligeKelly RowlandJill ScottTrey Songz, DrakeLil WayneChris Brown and Alicia Keys.  In addition, Breezy won three out of the six nominations including Best Male R&B Artist. If you weren’t able to watch, we’ve got you covered! Here’s what went down on Sunday at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium:


  • Just before the 2011 BET Awards aired, artists like Swizz Beatz, Eve, Miguel, Diggy Simons, Mindless Behavior, Lil TwistLloyd, and Big Sean performed during the red carpet pre-show, Live! Red! Ready!The show was hosted by Nick Cannon and 106 & Park‘s Terrence and Rocsi. 



  • Mary J Blige opened the show with a medley of her classic song “All Night Long,” “Real Love” and “What’s the 411?” Anita Baker joined her on stage to perform “Rapture.” She also premiered a new rock-inspired song with DJ Khaled and Jadakiss called “It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over”.


  • Rick Ross performed “Ashton Martin Music” without Chrisette Michele or Drake and he was later joined by Khaled, Lil Wayne and Ace Hood to showcase “Hustle Hard.”


  • Jill Scott did an acting sequence with Idris Elba and then performs a new song from her newly released album, Light Of Sun.


  • The actors from The Five Heartbeats joined the remaining three members of the real bad to perform “Night Like This.” It’s the 20th anniversary of the R&B group.
  • Chris Brown came out to his new single, “She Ain’t You,” and then performed “I Look At Me Now” withBusta Rhymes.
  • Alicia Keys performed a brand new song called “Typewriter” as well as “Woman’s Worth” with BrunoMars. She also shared a song with Rick Ross while a live orchestra playing the background. And of course, she performed the song that made her famous, “Fallin.’”
  • Big Sean took stage to play his hit single, “My Last” with the man of the hour, C Breezy. At the end he said, “Thank you BET for making my Grandma proud of me!”
  • Trey Songz came out to “Love Faces” and stripped off his clothes. He then showcased “Unusual” and was interrupted by Kelly Rowland, who gave an amazing performance of “Motivation.”


  • Before she was given the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Patti LaBelle tribute included Cee Lo Green,Marsha Ambrosius and Shirley Caesar.


o   Patti stated, “Marsha you are a bad, bad hefa.”


  • R.I.P. tribute performances celebrated the lives of late entertainers including Nate DoggTeena Marie,Clarence Clemons, Gil Scott-Heron and M-Bone.
  • Khaled returned to the stage for the third time to perform “I’m On One” with Rick Ross, Drake and Lil Wayne.
  • Beyonce performed via satellite “Best I Never Had” and “End Of Time” – both mark the first time she’s performed it live.



  • A lot of people were confused when it came to announcing the winner for Viewer’s Choice Award. 106 & Park hosts Terrence J and Rosci presented with contest winner Tiffany Green, who said that Drake won for his collaboration with Rihanna on “What’s My Name”, but only after an awkward moment it was later announced Brown was the winner.

  • Willow Smith was up for Video of the Year with her smash single, “Whip My Hair.” This marks her first major BET Award nomination.
